Positano
|
Thanks to the mild climate and to the beauty of the landscape, Positano is a place of vacation since the Roman Age. Positano is located in a splendid position: it looks out to sea, of which it has a wonderful view, and surrounded by green mountains, where rise the hamlets of Montepertuso and Nocelle, anciently connected only through a long stairway to the center of Positano.
Typical of the town are the stairways: there are a lot of them, that from the higher part of Positano lead to the beach; these stairways make Positano a vertical town and they create evocative and panoramic points.
During the Middle Ages in the town were built numerous towers, in order to defend from the pirates, and some of them are still visible: the first of the Coast is in the locality called Punta Campanella, where the Amalfi Coast finishes and begins the Sorrento Coast.
In Positano the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is worth a visit: it is one of most beautiful churches in Italy. According to the legend, the church was founded after the arrival in Positano of the Byzantine icon representing Mary, still today worshipped in the Church.
